URLs have changed little since 1994, but the Internet has exploded. URL complexity allows attackers to play tricks on both humans and machines by exploiting the fact that both people and URL parsers are inconsistent in the way they understand URLs. While Web browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Firefox are limited in the changes they can make without losing market share, we have the freedom to explore changes. We are building and evaluating the next generation of human-friendly navigation tools and security indicators for Web browsers.
When disasters such as hurricane Maria strike power grids, the grid can be down for weeks, despite the availability of emergency generation equipment and the survival of a majority of the infrastructure. Microgrids allow fragments of a larger electric grid to be restarted independently, but are vulnerable to cyber-impersonation attacks. Our PKI system will provide a groundwork for proving whether systems claiming to be part of the microgrid are real and honest.
